We are more aware than ever that being in good physical condition is an excellent advantage in the fight against viruses, diseases and age-related conditions – making it hugely important to have a proactive approach towards your health. We also know exercising and sporting activities are essential to mental and physical wellbeing, alongside good nutrition and relaxation.

Whether at the beginning of a new year, on a Monday or any other given day - many of us regularly make commitments to become more active, eat better and make changes to our overall lifestyle, whether it is to lose excess weight, to improve your resilience or simply to feel better.

These commitments are difficult to maintain long term, however, mostly because of hectic schedules, the lack of fixed routines and ultimately, the level of motivation required. To support you overcome this challenge, here are 5 tips our experts guarantee will help.

1. Define your goal

The first step is to identify the objective of your training - what do you want to achieve? Whether it's getting in shape, losing weight, or running a marathon, you need some specific goals in mind, otherwise staying motivated is hard. Also – the “why” is essential. Why is it important for you to achieve this result, what will it mean for you and your life?

Formulating your goals with the so-called SMART formula, which is very popular in business projects, can be helpful because it ensures your objectives are set in a concrete, measurable and feasible manner and it is therefore easier to track progress. You can find out more about setting SMART goals in relation to your training by reading our latest article on 'setting SMART fitness goals for better results.'

2. Monitor your progress

Once your specific goal is set, regularly tracking your progress towards that goal can keep your motivation levels high. There are certain devices that can help. For instance, if you are interested in weight loss, it is advisable to invest in a smart scale that measures the ratio between fat and muscle, because weight measurement alone does not cover all you need to know.

If you are keen to have an even closer look at your performance, consider using a fitness app or wearable device for exact exercise data. These can record the steps taken, the calories burned, the time you need for certain routes, etc. Find the app that will show you the specific data you want to keep track of. Alternatively, our personal trainers and wellbeing advisors can also recommend tests that you can take in the Club to measure your progress.

3. Have fun

Whatever style of workout you go for, the most important aspect is that you find something that you really enjoy doing - so that exercising isn't a chore, but something that you actively look forward to and most importantly, that you give priority to. Try different sports and exercise methods until you discover the activities that you really enjoy.

4. Find a training partner

Taking responsibility for someone close to you can be of great help when you lack the energy to exercise regularly. If you have an appointment with a friend to exercise together and then skip it, you are not only disappointing yourself, but also your friend. So this can be a motivational boost. At the same time, you have one less excuse not to find time for training, because by meeting up with others to work out, you are combining your physical activity with a pleasant social experience.

5.  Variety is key

If you start getting bored with your exercise programme, your motivation will likely drop. Variety can help you overcome this problem, remain committed and continue to work towards your initially defined goal. That is why at Aspria, our wellbeing experts create new, individual training programmes for you whenever you feel that your workout needs a fresh approach.
